The votes are in!

Today, the children in each class voted on the Beatrix Potter story they will focus on for the rest of the semester. They will study the characters and the plot of their stories. In December, they will choose a character from their selected story to dress up as for our first Beatrix Potter Dress Up Day!

Both the Spontaneous Sealions and the Luminous Kids (Ms. Blanca and Ms. Adriana’s classes) voted for Peter Rabbit.

The Vibrant Vipers (Ms. Gabi’s class) voted for a more obscure Potter story: The Pie and the Patty-pan. Here’s a YouTube read-aloud (featuring someone with a proper British accent 🙂 )

SAFE Toy Drive

Hello, dear Parents!

I wanted to let you know that next Monday, 11.7, our Toy Drive for SAFE will officially begin! SAFE is located in Austin and helps the Austin Children’s Shelter as well as SafePlace.

We introduce the Toy Drive to the children during circle time and set a class goal. When we talk about the children at SAFE, we mention only that many of them had to leave behind everything they own because their house wasn’t safe anymore–and that they had to move to a new place where their family would be safe. We help buy things these children might need or want and act like their Santa Claus!

The Toy Drive will run two weeks, from 11.7 to 11.18. On Friday, I will load up the truck and drive it down to the SAFE warehouse!

All donations should be new and unopened. These families need so much, so I have attached this list of other items (besides toys) that the shelter frequently requests.

Please let me know if you have any questions at all! Thank you for your support with our Toy Drive!

Our Rube Goldberg homework assignment

Hello, dear Parents!

The older friends have been studying simple machines over the past month. This week, they will think about a simple need they have (like turning the pages of a book or feeding the dog) and design a Rube Goldberg machine to help them meet that need.

Their homework assignment is identical to this classwork–except that we ask that children either draw a picture of their machine or that you send in a video of the real thing built and in operation at your house 🙂 The children watch these videos in afternoon circle.

Please access the following document for more details:

The due date for this assignment is Friday, November 18th. We are flexible, however, about when the projects are turned in!
